Buns are not just for ballerinas, hot dogs, and Princess Leia impersonators anymore. What was once a functional go-to for no-nonsense ladies is now a stylish trend. But choosing among the dozens out there can be quite the task.
High buns, donut buns, braided buns, undone buns, messy buns, slick buns, big buns, small buns…the list goes on and on. Don’t get overwhelmed, though — the following three staple buns are all you really need in your haircare arsenal.
The Donut Bun: Goes Great with Coffee…and Galas
This is a more fashionable, modern version of the classic bun. We’ve seen the donut bun grace the red carpet on the likes of Kelly Ripa, J. Lo, and Mrs. Jolie-Pitt, to name a few. To get this look, you’ll need a bun donut form — you can get them at any drugstore.
First, pull your hair into a ponytail. Now pull your pony through the hole of the donut form. Roll the form down a little so just the tips of your hair are sticking out. Tuck them under the form so your hair is fanned out evenly in a donut shape. Finally, roll the piece toward the base of your ponytail to create a bigger and better donut shape.
The braided bun is a sexy hybrid of two classic looks. To get it, loosely braid your hair, letting a few strands hang free. Tie two of the braid’s three strands with a hair tie. Pull the third strand while pushing the rest of your hair up into a bun. Tuck your hair under and lock it in place with a bobby pin. Leave a few strands hanging for a softer look.
What we love about the top knot is its versatility. Whether you’re going out for dinner and drinks after work or walking down the aisle, the top knot suits every occasion.
To get a top notch top knot, tie a ponytail at your preferred height. Twist your ‘tail, wrapping it halfway into a bun. Next, pull your pony by the ends firmly through the opening. Tuck or pin the rest of your hair in place. Some light hairspray for hold, and you’re on your way!
