spray tanMiami may be home to the semi-endless summer, but even the Florida sun takes a little break when winter rolls around. How can you keep that July tan going well into December? Here, we dish out a few fail-free tips on how to maintain the perfect faux glow.

1. Know what you want.

One size definitely doesn’t fit all when it comes to color, so consult with your technician beforehand to discuss exactly how tan you want to be. It’s the best way to ensure that you get the just-back-from-Bermuda hue you’ve been lusting after all season.

2. Come prepped.

Spray tans require smooth palettes. Several hours before your appointment, exfoliate your entire body, paying special attention to rough areas like elbows and knees. You’ll also want to cover any scabs or scratches with a high-quality petroleum jelly to ensure that the tanning solution doesn’t splotch around the edges.

3. Dress accordingly.

What you wear during the process is based entirely on your comfort level. Some women don’t mind going topless, for instance, but others want to stay slightly more covered. Either way works. Just make sure not to show up in your most expensive bikini; you don’t want the color to stain those designer threads.

4. Check the results.

Though you’ll be working with some of the area’s most skilled technicians, don’t forget to check for any tiny bits of splotching or streaking before you leave the salon. Some rough patches can be imperceptible until we apply the tan, and you’ll want to be confident that the coverage is completely perfect.

5. Pamper your skin.

Immediately after application, slip into relaxed clothes – anything too tight could smudge the solution – and keep your skin away from water for six to eight hours while the tan sets. You should also have an ultra-rich moisturizer on hand to lock in the color after your first shower.

6. Get into maintenance mode.

The tan will start to fade as your skin regenerates, so avoid anything that will slough off cells prematurely. Keep exfoliation, shaving and alcohol-based cleansing to a bare minimum for the first week, and consider using a self-tanner to refresh the color on your face between appointments. It’s often the first area to lose that golden hue.
