The New Year is just hours away, so now is the perfect time to start thinking about what the new 2016 version of you is going to look like. Although the annoying thing about chasing beauty trends is that, usually, by the time you discover them, they’re already going out of style. And no one wants to be the girl buying skinny jeans when wide-leg is back with a vengeance!
To stay ahead of the pack, you have to look into the beauty world’s crystal ball — meaning New York Fashion Week and cutting-edge models and stylists. So without further ado, here are our psychic beauty predictions for the new year.
When it Comes to Makeup in 2016, Subtlety is for Suckers
As 2015 ends, so will the trend of makeup that looks like you have no makeup on. Think Katniss when she’s not all dolled up by Effie. This year is the year of bold makeup — red lips, exaggerated eyelashes, and, believe it or not, blue eyeshadow.
In fact, at New York Fashion Week, the Chanel models had blue eyeshadow painted around their eyes in the shape of a bandit mask! If you’re not quite ready to have your makeup scream “stick ‘em up!” at work, try limiting a vibrant blue to your eyelids and lower lash line.
Another trend we’re seeing on the runway is bright red lips. Of course, red lipstick never really goes out of style. But for 2016, look for a shade of red best described as “Snow White’s apple.”
The Hair of the Future: Twisty Braids, Side Parts, and… Pool Hair?
The runways were awash with fresh new hairstyles in the last few months. If you don’t yet have mad hair-styling skills, you’ll love the first trend: twisty, or rope, braids.
To get this look, simply make a ponytail at the nape of your neck and divide it into two sections. Hairspray each section heavily before you braid to keep those frizzies tamed. Twist each section counterclockwise with your finger, cross them clockwise, and secure at the bottom.
The “working-gal chic” look was all over the runways as well, which means side parts are back. If you want a more daring look, “pool hair” also seems to be all the rage. To get this wet, wavy look, gel your hair, braid a few portions of it, and leave the braids in for a few hours. Unravel them before you go out for soft, post-pool waves.
