It’s hard to believe that a multi-million-dollar nail polish empire began with a six-year-old in a beauty salon in Queens. Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie nail polish, remembers the delight of going to the salon with her mother in the 1950s.
She loved getting her nails done, but the blah color selection always disappointed her — the same old pinks, reds, and, maybe if you were lucky, a beige. Essie decided that just wouldn’t do and she needed to do something about it.
What Happens in Vegas Apparently Doesn’t Stay in Vegas
Later in life, Essie teamed up with a chemist to mix her first 12 nail colors. She boarded a plane to Vegas in 1981 with 640 pounds of her polish to promote it to showgirls, dealers, cocktail waitresses, and salons. Her mischievously named polishes immediately caught on, and, by 2010, Essie was bringing in $28 million in annual revenue.
From “Jamaica Me Crazy” to “Starter Wife,” We Have the Shade for You
The Essie brand has earned a reputation among beauticians for its unbeatable quality and “no-chip” properties, which is why Bella Vita in Miami is proud to offer our clients a full line of Essie polishes.
Essie always offers the trendiest shades of the season — in fact, in 2013, the pale, cornflower blue of “Bikini So Teeny” became the best-selling trend nail polish of all time. Whether you’re in the mood for “Butler Please” blue or the subdued, sheer pink of “Ballet Slippers,” our collection of shades is sure to please.
A fun fact about Ballet Slippers — Queen Elizabeth’s hairdresser sent a letter to Essie in 1989 ordering the shade because it was the only color Her Majesty would wear! So maybe Lorde was right when she said we’ll never be royals, but at least our nails can come darn close.
