If you thought choosing a nail color was overwhelming, wait until you see the styles and types of waxes available. The smart thing is to do a little research before you head into the salon. By the time your appointment rolls around, you’ll know exactly what and how you want waxed.

The Brazilian, the Bikini, and the Playboy (Walk into a Bar)

Yes, your waxing style options sound like the beginning of a bad joke. We know their names aren’t particularly illuminating, so let us give you the deets.

The Brazilian bares everything, yes we mean everything. If you want to be ready for anything — romantic evenings and scanty bikinis alike — the Brazilian is ideal. Just make sure you’re not too shy — to get your back area, you’ll likely have to bring your knees to your chest.

The bikini wax is less intensive. Your aesthetician will remove only the hair that would be visible while you’re wearing a bikini, including any on your inner thighs. This option will not mess with your back side either. You’ll leave with a neat triangle shape.

Last but not least, the playboy is essentially a Brazilian with a twist. Instead of taking all your hair, this option leaves a strip or small triangle of hair on the mons pubis. You may have heard this called “the landing strip.” This wax is perfect if you don’t want your pubic area looking like the top of Bruce Willis’ head.

Types of Wax

There are several different types of wax, but we have good news for you. You don’t have to make this decision! A good aesthetician will know what to use based on the style of wax you want, your skin type, etc.

Briefly, though, hard wax is the kind that you apply hot. It adheres to the hair, pulling it out when it’s removed. This is most commonly used for bikini-area waxes. Soft wax is mostly for larger areas of the body, such as legs and back.

Now that you’re in the know, you’re ready to get your wax on. Make an appointment with one of our experienced aestheticians for the wax of your choice.
